It is built on the River Don, near the confluence of the Don and the Rother. Rotherham lies in the Don Valley between Sheffield and Doncaster. The town is six miles from Sheffield city centre.

It is the main town in the Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham. The population of the Borough of Rotherham is 248,175, and that of the Rotherham urban sub-area 117,262.
